About us

The United Church of Canada is Canada's largest protestant denomination. Formed in 1925, The United Church of Canada was created by a union of Presbyterian, Methodist, Congregational, and the General Council of the Local Union Churches. We believe we strengthen one another to work, through God's grace, for a better world. To this end, we cooperate with other churches, faith traditions, and people of goodwill to eliminate poverty and protect those who are most vulnerable.

  • 100 Words of Hope: The Other Side of the Boat In John 21, the disciples are fishing, with little success. A voice from shore says, “Try casting your nets on the other side of the boat!” Success! Only when the disciples had success did they understand that the voice on the shore was Jesus. As a disciple, Jesus stands on the shore as we fish, offering support and love in our life. The spirits around us. Let us look to the shore in hope and rejoice as Peter and the disciples did when they saw the light! Our hope is in the voice inviting us to fish on the other side! —Rev. Peter Hartmans, Dublin Street United Church, Guleph, ON We are inviting people to share "100 Words of Hope" that draw from deep spirituality to speak to these moments of high anxiety and change in the church, Canada, and the world. • The grey weather on Saturday, March 29 didn’t dampen the spirits of about 30 students, alumni, and chaplaincy supporters from the Ecumenical Chaplaincy at the University of Toronto (ECUT) who undertook a Lenten pilgrimage. The one-day walking pilgrimage visited United Church congregations in downtown Toronto, in commemoration of the United Church of Canada’s centennial. The pilgrimage was a prayerful, embodied experience of faith, helping us celebrate the rich history of United Church congregations in downtown Toronto while also exploring how these churches continue to be places of spiritual life and community engagement today. At the end of the walk, one student participant shared that seeing and hearing from the various congregations about being church in their unique ways gave them a real sense of “hope and unity.” In this photo, the group poses at the past and future home of Bloor Street United (and the future home of the United Church national office), where they learned about the rich history of the congregation, the current context, and shared in prayer. • 100 Words of Hope: Healing through Mourning Without hope for the coming world after this world, how we could endure this world! Without love in this world before the next world, how we could transform this world! Without faith beyond this world, how we could walk in the darkness moving forward to the world inside of us! All healings come from good mournings as all the nights will be filled with peace. —Sung Ran Kim, Alpha Korean United Church, Toronto, ON -------------------- We are inviting people to share "100 Words of Hope" that draw from deep spirituality to speak to these moments of high anxiety and change in the church, Canada, and the world.
